iN NUMBERS: Number of wildfires in BC trending down over last three years

Wildfire season is still a ways off, but it’s not something that should be ignored until it’s happening.

Here’s a quick look at this year’s wildfire season while there’s still lots of time to get ready for the next one. 

Here are the numbers provided by the provincial government:

  • 1,350: Wildfires burned in BC in 2025.
  • 1,697: Wildfires burned in BC in 2024.
  • 2,293: Wildfires burned in BC in 2023.
  • 886,360: Hectares were burned in wildfires in BC in 2025. 
  • 42: Evacuation orders were issued in BC in 2025.
  • 2,600: Properties were evacuated in 2025. 
  • 85: Per cent of the wildfires in 2025 were contained under four hectares.
  • 10.3: Million litres of fire retardant were used in 2025 in BC.
  • 27: Air tankers and birddog aircraft were used to fight wildfires at the peak of the 2025 season. 
  • 29,442: Hours. That’s the combined flight time for wildfire helicopter crews in 2025. 
  • 26,926: That’s how many calls BC Wildfire Service took related to open burning in 2025. 
  • 510: Million dollars. That’s the estimated cost to suppress wildfires in BC this year.
