People aged 24 and under are going to be able to ride the bus for free in Penticton for another year.
The U24 Transit Pass is available for people aged 13 to 24, since kids 12 and under always ride for free, according to a press release from the City of Penticton issued Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The funding for the free bus pass pilot project is coming from a three-year grant from the federal government’s Building Safer Communities.
The pilot project began back in 2024, so 2026 is going to be the third year.
The city has said in the past that the program is designed to break down barriers for youth so they can access services, socialize and be a more active party of the community. It also said that providing young people with the ability to be mobile helps make city safer and livable.
Locals can register for free at City Hall, the Ooknakane Friendship Centre, Foundry Penticton, Penticton Public Library and the Penticton Community Centre.
The passes work for any route within Penticton and are valid until Dec. 31, 2026.
To register people just need to bring proof of ID like a driver’s license, passport, student ID or school registration documents.
