iN DISCUSSION: No where else in the world was the shooting of Renee Good justified

This is where cold hard facts give way to the hottest of takes, mostly mine I suppose. I’m the editor, Marshall Jones.

Want to include yours? Listen, this isn’t the comment section, this isn’t social media. Discussion and debate requires context and a wee bit of bravery — we need your name and where you’re writing from. Include it in your account or email me anytime.

Why our newsletter should be on your 2026 wish list

When news got rejected by Facebook, it changed everything.

It wasn’t just that huge audiences were removed overnight, it changed workflows and rationale. It made me realize just how much of what we did was gaming social media, playing by its rules. Facebook dictated everything from photo styles to word choices to subjects we cover.

And just as I was wrapping my head around that latest cart-turning revolution, along comes artificial intelligence.

That can mean a lot of things but my chief concern is the publishing conundrum. Disseminating news on the web feeds the machines that reword that information so its massive audiences needn’t click through to the source.

That’s something we need to figure out, but that’s not actually my point.

My point is that this newsletter solves all of these problems.

It has the added benefit of ensuring we stay local and being more personal, authentic and accountable.

That’s my wish and goal for 2026. I want to make this newsletter better and share it with more people (if you want to help, you could forward it to someone you think would like it).

That’s my resolution, what’s yours? Email me at mjones@infonews.ca.

Premier Eby on right track talking refineries instead of pipelines

BC Premier David Eby maintains his refusal to allow or even entertain discussion of a new pipeline to BC’s north coast.

But now he’s added a wrinkle, albeit a familiar one.

If we’re going to invest in our resource industry, he said, build a refinery, not a pipeline.

This has been drafted and rejected by industry many times before. Apparently, at least to them, it makes more sense to send it to US refineries and buy it back as finished products like gasoline.

But I’d argue we have new incentives. The return of a Might is Right US policy changes everything.

I think we have to stop pretending things are going back to normal and start acting in our own interests. Shouldn’t we start by seeking and attaining independence over our own energy reserves?

If you’ve got an opinion on this, I am open for business. Send it to mjones@infonews.ca.

No where else in the world was the shooting of Renee Good justified

Another day, another snuff video from American civil society.

This time, it wasn’t an assassination, it was the inevitable violent loss of life during a confrontation with American immigration forces.

Renee Good, an American, was killed among the confusion, shot in the head at point-blank range in her minivan while attempting to flee an odd confrontation with armed ICE officers.

Now we see Americans perform their ritual Death Dance. They don their red or blue shades to magically see in the video only what their team sees, then scramble to the keyboards to mash out their Talking Points.

The absence of humanity and compassion for their fellow countrymen, from Charlie Kirk to Renee Good to thousands of school children, is as astounding as it is soulless.

Tell me again how much you love America.

I’m just glad I’m Canadian.

Not here, nor anywhere else in the western world would that shooting be considered justified. Our police don’t shoot people for fleeing or attempting to flee. Certainly not if they’re unarmed and not dangerous.

Tensions are rising in Minnesota where this happened. I’m worried that’s a feature of the Trump administration, not a bug. I’m worried they are looking for this kind of confrontation, sending ICE into ‘blue’ cities. How will Trump respond?

I have no answers, beyond the Ghostbusters II Defence.

That’s right, I said Ghostbusters II!

There’s already a cloud of anger and bitterness and monsters and ghosts over American everything.

I don’t need to add to it. I’m staying off social media. I wish nothing but the best for our American friends.

I’d love to get some perspective on all this. Email me at mjones@infonews.ca.

iN RESPONSE

iN RESPONSE to Friday’s newsletter opinion editorial on the killing of Renee Good by ICE

“I believe as a human being we can not idly sit by and watch comfortably away from an alarming situation or situations that reminds me of a period not so long ago of similar actions that led to the demise of millions of people in the holocaust!
The type of behaviour that is happening, the immigration ICE raids, the abduction of a neighbouring country’s sovereign  president and wife, the blatant racist talking points by a President (US) about other countries and peoples, the attack on journalism and rights of opinion being denied, (60 Minutes, CNN), Universities blackmailed!
This is creeping fascism, not unlike – actually very much like what happened in Nazi Germany. Probably most of our fathers and grandfathers in both Canada and the US  fought in WWII to get rid of this horrifying faction and it is emerging again.
We can’t win against this without the ability to protest. We should speak out at every opportunity and demand accountability from our lawmakers, politicians our friends and family.
We can’t put our heads in the sand. Many did to the detriment of thousands of people like you and me.
We can’t go through it again.”

iN RESPONSE to Wednesday’s newsletter opinion editorial on refineries instead of pipelines

It was Black that was into building a refinery in BC. Kitimat, if I remember right, at the end of the Northern Gateway. Would have been fantastic, but the pipeline with one leak ever would have destroyed Canada’s best salmon rivers. Another refinery at say Brittania would serve BC well. Use our oil for our fuel and export, but the problem is eg. jet fuel is cheaper to bring into YVR than make it here. At least was.
As I have said for years, our NG should be used in industry here not made into LNG at a huge energy cost to ship offshore.

— Ken Caldwell via email

Not surprised that Eby still doesn’t get it. We need to get the oil to offshore customers. That’s the most important thing to get done to ensure our continuing as a viable country on our own. A refinery would be nice, Kamloops would be a perfect spot for one, it would also be the perfect location for four or more nuclear power plants, the geography is ideal. Amazes me these weren’t done 30 years ago but our politicians never seem to think further ahead than the next election.

Son makes pancakes too late at night, and other ridiculous calls to Kelowna RCMP

Ya gotta feel sorry for a son who has grown up in a household where a parent would call police because of a pancake making infraction.

MP Scott Anderson says he was asked to join Carney’s Liberals — but he’s the only one

This article is a typical biased sham relying on a intentionally vague question which readers having to work to find any provable merit in the question. Sad really given Mr. Andersons immense popularity within the riding. I have known Mr. Anderson for 10 years, having dealt with him on a business level. Everything he does starts with integrity, from representing Vernon’s citizens as a councilman or business dealings.

— Jeff Hunkin via iNFOnews.ca

I think he’s high on his own supply. This MAGHAT wouldn’t do a thing for Canadians that Trump would disapprove of. There really isn’t a party that wants him.

iN RESPONSE to last week’s newsletter look back at iNFOnews.ca stories you won’t find anywhere else

Hi Marshall,

I’m finally getting around to thanking you for the list of stories from 2025. There was only one that I had missed, and I was so grateful to you for taking the time to publish the list. Keep up the good work!

iN RESPONSE to Friday’s newsletter opinion editorial on cell phone service in Okanagan and Thompson valleys

Hello Marshall,

We live in an older mobile home (metal siding) in Penticton. My wife is on Telus – reception in the house is terrible. I switched to Rogers – service is somewhat better but still not good.

I discovered that with Android (I don’t know if it works with Apple) you can set up your phone so it will use WIFI when in the house so it is not an issue any more.

— Ian Otterbein via email

I live in Kaleden. My cellphone, (Telus) is bad, I have to run all over the house to speak. Never the same place. I must sit as still as a mouse or calls are dropped or the can’t here. I am sick to death of it!!!

Tara Armstrong Recall Countdown

Tara Armstrong is currently the MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream. She rode the coattails of the BC Conservative Party, got elected, then rejected and left the party to serve as an Independent within weeks because the Conservatives were too left wing. Now she gets to spout moronic, hateful rhetoric and claim that her riding supports her.

iN DISCUSSION: Rats. So many rats | iNFOnews.ca
Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream MLA Tara Armstrong on April 17, 2025. SUBMITTED/Legislative Assembly of BC

Elections BC says you can recall an MLA if 40% of eligible voters in the riding sign a recall petition — but not for the first 18 months after an election. Some people started an online petition calling for a byelection once she made a shift to independent, then got herself a raise by forming her own party, but it won’t mean anything until the countdown clock hits zero.

So let the countdown begin!
