A Kamloops man’s death may be connected a person he met through an online dating platform.
Police have not released many details about the circumstances of Muhammad “Ash” Zafar’s murder, but a call for witnesses Wednesday suggested people using gay dating sites might have information that could aid the investigation.
“We are still asking anyone who had contact with Mr. Zafar between Saturday evening and late Sunday to reach out to investigators,” Staff Sgt. Kevin McIntyre of Kamloops RCMP said in a news release.
“This includes individuals who use men‑seeking‑men dating sites or apps and may have communicated with him, or with someone using his images or profile information.”
Kamloops RCMP found Zafar dead in his West End home on Dalgleish Drive, Jan. 5, during a wellness check, then closed the area around his home.
Police said they are looking for information from anyone who saw or spoke with him between Jan. 2 and 5.
Police have not release the cause of his death.
“We are… appealing to anyone who noticed unusual behaviour in someone they know, such as unexplained injuries, sudden changes in routine, cancelled plans, or conduct that seemed out of character, as well as residents or visitors who observed suspicious activity in the Dalgleish Drive or West End area during that timeframe,” Staff Sgt. McIntyre said.
“Seemingly small details often produce significant outcomes, if something stood out to you, even for a moment, we need you to come forward.”
Although police said Zafar’s death is an isolated incident and there’s no risk to the public, the Jan. 7 news release includes a note warning the public to “take precautions” when meeting new people through online platforms.
That includes sharing plans with a friend or family member, arrange check-ins, meet in public places and to trust your instincts and leave if it feels unsafe.
Anyone with information can contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
