Kelowna RCMP has formed a new unit to tackle organized crime and it made two arrests.
The new four-member Kelowna Gang Enforcement Team pilot project started on Jan. 6.
The officers made two arrests and seized drugs and guns on Jan. 8, according to a press release from police.
RCMP said the officers made a “proactive vehicle stop” and found two people with outstanding warrants. Both people were arrested and remain in custody.
One suspect has a driving while prohibited charge and the other is facing firearm-related charges.
During the investigation police seized three guns and drugs.
“Organized crime and the drug trade affect every part of our community,” RCMP Sgt. Scott Powrie with the Kelowna Crime Reduction Unit said in the release.
RCMP said the members of the Gang Enforcement Team were pulled from various units due to their specialized training and experience dealing with the drug trade.
Police said the team has already conducted several operations including the arrests on Jan. 8.
RCMP said it has been trying to crackdown on organized crime, especially the drug trade.
“By removing firearms, drugs, and criminal influence, we are working to restore safety and confidence in Kelowna,” Sgt. Powrie said.
