British Columbians name their winter driving pet peeves

Winter driving can be an upsetting experience, especially when you have to share the road with other annoying drivers.

The additional details of dealing with ice, snow, and changing weather conditions can be a challenge for some motorists to overcome, and their driving habits can be exasperating.

B.C. Transportation is asking drivers what ticks them off the most when it comes to winter driving – here’s a few of the things that drivers have responded with so far:

  • People who drive with only a peephole to look out of
  • SUVs that cut in front and throw slush all over the windshield
  • People who think they are invincible because they drive a 4×4 or all wheel drive vehicle
  • People who don’t take all the snow off their vehicles
  • Drivers who think they are invisible, and no one else matters
  • Drivers who tailgate
  • Truckers who don’t think about the vehicle they’re passing in a snowstorm
  • People who don’t clear snow off the back window
  • People who don't put their winter tires on by Oct. 1

Calling the airing of driving beefs “cathartic,” B.C. Transportation says although we can’t control others’ driving behaviours, we can enlighten ourselves on how our highway habits affect others’ experiences, which can lead to self improvement.

You can add your pet winter driving peeve to the list by taking the Tell Tran BC survey — but only after letting us know in the comments below.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
