Kelowna’s Matt Dwyer fighting in Brazil this weekend

KELOWNA – Toshido MMA’s Matt Dwyer is in Brazil this weekend for a UFC welterweight fight against William Macario in what Sherdog.com calls a “loser leaves town matchup.”

This is Dwyer’s second UFC appearance since his debut against Albert Tumenov in which he was stopped by a surprise head kick in the first round.

Although Dwyer and Macario both have 7-2 records, physically the two are very different. Macario, who is 5'11", is primarily a boxer who prefers to get inside his opponents' guards. The 6'4" Dwyer prefers to utilize his reach advantage to keep his opponents on the defensive.

Team Toshido head coach David Lea posted to Facebook that being in Brazil is a dream come true.

“When I started this journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu almost 20 years ago, I never would have imagined the experiences this martial art would bring to my life. Here I am with Team Toshido's Matt Dwyer getting ready for UFC Fight Night 61, and the whole time I kept thinking "I'm doing BJJ in the founding country of Brazil at the UFC!"

UFC Fight Night will take place Sunday evening in Porto Alegre, Brazil with headliners Antonio “Bigfoot Silva" squaring off against legendary grappler and former heavyweight champ Frank Mir.
