Nearly nine-times the seats needed in Apple Bowl for Kelowna’s CFL games

It’ll be no small feat to meet the demand for CFL sports fans in Kelowna this summer as thousands descend on Kelowna’s Apple Bowl.

Kelowna is set to host two BC Lions home games, where 17,500 fans are expected to watch the Leos take on the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Elks.

City staff have their work cut out for them to boost capacity at the 2,000-seat Apple Bowl, but it has hosted more than its regular capacity before. In June 2024, a Canadian Premier League soccer game drew more than 6,200 fans.

Kelowna recreation facilities supervisor Stephen Hebden said the CFL game is expected to sell out, so the attendance at the Apple Bowl will likely be at an all-time high.

“It’s going to be crazy,” he said.

How much it’ll cost to bring in seating for 15,000 more fans to the home of the Okanagan Sun junior squad isn’t clear.

The city’s communications department did not respond when asked about the plan to increase temporary seating by thousands. The costs were still unknown at least at the time the games were announced, according to the Daily Courier.

On June 27, the Lions will take on the Stamps, followed by a July 4 game against the Elks.

According to the BC Lions website, season ticket holders will get early pre-sale access to game tickets with the public getting access Feb. 19.
