Glass scores twice as New Jersey Devils capture 5-4 victory over Vancouver Canucks

VANCOUVER — The New Jersey Devils extended their Western Canada winning streak to three games with a 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday at Rogers Arena.

Cody Glass scored twice while Lenni Hameenaho, Nico Hischier and Connor Brown had the other goals for the Devils (27-22-2).

Linus Karlsson, Teddy Blueger, Zeev Buium and Brock Boeser replied for the Canucks (17-29-5).

Markstrom made 21 saves for New Jersey to improve 14-11-1. Vancouver’s Kevin Lankinen stopped 19 shots to fall to 7-15-4.

New Jersey went 2-for-3 on the power play. The Canucks were 0-for-2 with the man advantage and have now gone four games without a power-play goal.

The Devils took an early lead when Hameenaho scored his first NHL goal with a goalmouth tap-in at 1:41 of the first.

In the second, Hischier and Glass built a 3-0 lead with goals 40 seconds apart. Six minutes later, Karlsson got the Canucks on the board with his 11th of the year.

Then with Conor Garland serving a double-minor for high-sticking Hischier, Blueger scored shorthanded before Brown replied with his 10th of the year.

With 1:48 left in the second, Buium pulled the puck out of a goal-mouth crowd and found the net to bring the deficit to 4-3.

In the third, Glass added his second of the night. Boeser scored his 12th of the season with 1:12 remaining and Lankinen pulled for the extra attacker.

Takeaways

Canucks: After missing 43 games with a lower-body injury, Blueger’s second goal of the year was his first since Oct. 19. Buium’s goal was his second as a Canuck. The first one also came against New Jersey on Dec. 14.

Devils: Hameenaho logged his first goal and first assist in his third NHL game. The 21-year-old right-winger was recalled from the AHL Utica Comets on Jan. 17.

Brown’s second-period power-play goal helped snuff out the momentum that the Canucks had sparked with Blueger’s short-handed score.
