A Kelowna business owner, who once taught at a Chilliwack elementary school, has been charged with possession of child sexual abuse material more than a decade after he was jailed for the same crime.
Jayson John Davey was charged last month with a single count of possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material for an alleged incident in the summer of 2025.
The charge comes 12 years after Davey, who at the time was an elementary school teacher and went by the name John Patrick Davy, was sentenced to 30 months in jail after police found roughly 28,000 images and videos of what was then referred to as child pornography.
Davey had been a popular Grade 6 teacher at Greendale Elementary School in Chilliwack. He began teaching in 1997, but lost his licence for life following his conviction in 2014.
After being released from prison, he changed his name to Jayson and added a letter “e” to Davy and at some point moved to Kelowna.
For the last decade, the 56-year-old has run Tremendous Trivia, which puts on pub quizzes across the Okanagan and several other provinces. He goes by the first name JD.
The company said it was unaware of Davey’s past and he’s now been fired.
“His criminal acts go against everything we stand for in our company, our values and standards as a reputable partner and contributor in our community,” the company said in an email.
After Davey was arrested and released on bail, he was arrested again, this time in Kelowna with a computer that had more than 1,000 child porn images on it, according to a Vancouver Sun report. Another news article says Davey was caught trying to hide a hard drive in his attic at the time of his arrest. He was said to be a low to moderate risk to reoffend.
According to a Chilliwack Times report, the sentencing judge in 2014 said there was a “great paradox” which defied comprehension, on how a man with a “stellar reputation” as a teacher could commit such a crime.
The judge and defence lawyer at sentencing both said that after 16 years of teaching, there had never been a complaint about him.
However, the Chilliwack Times reported that in 2009, three female Grade 6 students did complain about being touched by Davy, but the school district rejected the students’ complaints and didn’t forward the file to the RCMP.
When iNFOnews.ca called the phone number on the Tremendous Trivia website, a person answered to the name John, but didn’t respond when asked if they were John Patrick Davy.
None of the current charges has been proven in court.
Davey is next back in court at the end of the month.
