Snowshoe hares can be found in forests throughout the Thompson-Okanagan region yet are hard to see thanks to their secretive nature and unique ability to change fur colour to blend into their surroundings.
Most of the year the hares are brown in colour, staying hidden in the understory of forests where they snack on plants and leaves. In winter, they turn white to match the snow and their intricate network of tracks can be seen.
While hares are a common animal found across the country, camouflaging abilities are just one of their unique traits. The hares can run 45 kilometres per hour and clear ten feet in a single bound, according the Canadian Wildlife Federation.

Their feet are large like snowshoes with thick fur and long toes that expand wide and allow them to travel easily on snow. Their ears are full of veins that regulate body temperature throughout the seasons.
Snowshoe hares snort when they are irritated and will make a high-pitched squeal when caught. During breeding season, the hares make clicking sounds at each other.
Snowshoe hares are an important part of forest ecosystems as they are food for predators including lynx, fox, owls and hawks. They are the most popular small game animal in the country.
