SURREY — Mounties in British Columbia and the province’s police watchdog agency are both investigating after shots were fired during a traffic stop in Kelowna where an officer was dragged with a vehicle.

The RCMP and the Independent Investigations Office say in separate statements that it happened late Thursday, when police conducted a vehicle stop.

The watchdog agency says a man inside the Mercedes sedan that had been stopped had an interaction with police, and police fired shots while the driver took off, briefly dragging an officer that resulted in minor injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office says police found the man involved the next day and arrested him, then took him to hospital because he had gunshot wounds, though police say the injuries are not life-threatening.

The investigation’s office says it will be considering if the injury of the driver meets its investigation threshold of serious harm, and if there’s a connection between those injuries and police actions or inactions.

The RCMP, who say a stun gun was also deployed during the traffic stop, say its officers are conducting a concurrent investigation into the driver’s actions during the interaction.
