DETROIT (AP) — East Lansing High School guard KJ Torbert was named Michigan’s Mr. Basketball on Monday and became the first son of a former winner in the 46-year history of the award.
Kelvin Torbert was Mr. Basketball in 2001 while attending Flint Northwestern. He was a four-year player at Michigan State and played professionally overseas.
“It means a lot to me, just the magnitude of the award,” Kelvin Torbert said. “I think I am more happy for him than I was for myself. Just going off the word my dad always told me, `There’s only one man that wants to see you do better than them, and that’s your dad.’
“I’m excited for him winning it and doing things his own way.”
The 6-foot-3 Torbert, who averages more than 25 points and six rebounds, signed to play for Bowling Green next season.
The defending-champion Trojans face Ann Arbor Pioneer in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
