Handgun seized during Salmon Arm traffic stop: RCMP

RCMP pulled over a vehicle in Salmon Arm earlier this week and found a loaded handgun following a search.

Officers conducted the traffic stop, March 11, and spotted “indicators consistent with drug trafficking,” according to an RCMP media release. RCMP don’t say where in the Salmon Arm the traffic stop took place.

They searched the vehicle, found the loaded handgun and seized it, and arrested the driver and passenger.

The driver was released from custody but the passenger, Kale Skjeie, faces several charges.

The Crown has approved charges of failing to comply with an undertaking by possessing a firearm, possessing a firearm without a licence or registration certificate and possessing a restricted firearm while prohibited from doing so, RCMP said.

Skjeie is behind bars waiting for a bail hearing.

“This type of activity has no place in our community,” Salmon Arm RCMP commander Sgt. Simon Scott said in the release.

“Illegal drugs and firearms pose a serious risk to the public and our officers remain committed to holding those responsible accountable.”

That handgun is a Smith and Wesson .380 Bodyguard. It has a very short barrel at roughly 70mm. In Canada any handgun with a barrel length of less than 105mm is a prohibited weapon. It is highly unlikely that this pistol was ever legally owned by anyone in Canada let alone legally owned by the guy in the car. It is more likely that it has been smuggled over the USA/Canada border from the USA.
