Person severely burned in Osoyoos apartment fire

Three people were injured in an apartment fire in Osoyoos early this morning, including one person who was airlifted to Vancouver hospital with severe burns.

The Osoyoos Fire Rescue were called to the apartment fire at 12:14 a.m. today, Feb. 2, according to a media release. The fire was in a single unit in the apartment building in the 8900 block of 92 Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews found residents evacuating the building.

Residents reported a person was still in the building and firefighters made entry into the first floor and found a single occupant within five minutes. The victim was treated on scene by firefighters and B.C. Ambulance paramedics, and was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with severe burns.

A second person who was outside the building when firefighters arrived, sustained burns to their hands in an attempt to help extinguish the fire.

A third victim was treated for smoke inhalation and was given medical treatment by firefighters until a more ambulances arrived.

The majority of residents were able to return to their homes after firefighters ventilated the building.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing, with cause undetermined at this point. A fire alarm was activated in the building, which allowed residents time to evacuate.

The fire was contained to a single unit.
