Man shot dead at homeless encampment in Abbotsford, B.C.

ABBOTSFORD — Police in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley are investigating a fatal shooting at the “complex” crime scene of a large homeless encampment.

Abbotsford police and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the shooting happened late Monday night at the Whatcom Road Park and Ride, which they said was the location of a large encampment.

Arriving officers found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries, and he later died in hospital.

IHIT has taken over the case, and said the shooting was believed to be targeted, although the full circumstances were not clear.

The homicide team said the victim was a 69-year-old man who lived at the encampment, and his name could not be released pending notification of his family.

IHIT said investigators believed the shooting was an isolated incident, and it was not related to gang activity or extortion.

Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said the “swift response” from Abbotsford police was important to secure the crime scene.

“Crime scenes such as this one can be complex due to the outdoor component and exposure to the elements. You can expect investigators in the area for some time speaking with witnesses and searching the area.”

Anyone with information on the shooting are asked to contact police.
