Many feel that the biggest reward for living in the Okanagan is summertime—enjoying outdoor places and private sanctuaries throughout the long, warm summers. With a bit of planning, Valley residents can maximize their outdoor relaxation time while minimizing maintenance, and Okanagan Power Equipment is just the place to get you there.
When spring hits and backyards come alive, the difference between frustration and fun often comes down to one thing: having reliable tools and equipment. A mower that is always up for the task. A trimmer that is powerful enough for any project–yet light enough to not wear you out. Deciding on the right tools might seem straightforward, but actually, it might take the knowledge of a seasoned expert to get your yard and shop streamlined.
Fuelling the Okanagan Lifestyle
We recently reached out to Okanagan Power Equipment in Kelowna, one of the Valley’s top-rated equipment suppliers and repair facilities, and what they had to say about getting ready for summer might just surprise you. For example, did you know that there are free tricks to make string trimmers perform better, and for longer than ever? Or that upgrading to professional-quality cordless equipment can actually save you money and maintenance? Well, it’s true, and local expert Angie Hamilton filled us in on how it all works.
Angie Hamilton is one of the owners of Okanagan Power Equipment (OPE) and brings a lifetime of experience to the table. Before OPE took root, Angie was an integral part of her parents’ power equipment and yard care company, so keeping homeowners and Kelowna businesses set up for success in their yards and gardens is built right into her DNA. After her parents retired from the industry in 2015, Angie drafted plans for her own business that would allow her to showcase top-quality equipment—and service what they sell.
From those grassroots beginning, OPE has built up a loyal following of professionals and DIY-ers, with an impressive lineup of equipment for every requirement. They also have a second-to-none service shop at the corner of Highway 97 and McCurdy Road; they are an Elite Dealer for BE power tools, and a certified STIHL and Toro repair centre.
Getting Ready for Summer
Hamilton doesn’t waste any time beating around the bush when I ask her what the secret is to maximizing enjoyment time while minimizing maintenance time. “Making sure you have the right equipment for the projects you tackle is the priority,” she tells us. Nowadays, the discussion around purchasing power equipment has become much more complex. It is no longer just about which brand performs best; it comes down to the specific tasks a customer wants to take on.

“We spend as much time as is needed to make sure that our customer heads home with the right tool for the job,” Angie explains. That power equipment might be gas, but more often than ever, the right tools are turning out to be cordless electric. Industry leaders like STIHL and Toro have impressive lineups of trouble-free, emission-free, and nearly noise-free power tools that are built to last – ready to go when you need them.
Reducing Maintenance Cost and Down Time the Easy Way – Go Electric
The debate around gas vs. electric is a lively one, and the pros at Okanagan Power Equipment don’t press customers one way or the other. From what Hamilton tells us, though, the leaps in technology are taking clients by surprise. Take Stihl-brand leaf blowers, for example. The Stihl BGA 60 battery-powered blower easily matches the blowing force of the professional series gas version, and as Angie points out, you will never need to purchase gas, an air filter, clean a carburetor, service spark plugs, or perform many of the traditional maintenance needs.
When we get around to talking about cost, Angie has some more good points that favour electric. “When you buy cordless tools, they can be more expensive, but you are basically paying for the money you would have spent on gas up front, and all the other benefits are free.” Those conveniences, like never needing to winterize motors, no emissions, and the near-zero maintenance used to mean a reduction in power and battery life. Those factors are no longer the case, Angie says, at least not with the quality lineups that they carry. Cordless electric tools are often just as powerful as gas, with long-life batteries that take a beating.
Another key point both STIHL and Toro highlight is noise. In the case of leaf blowers and trimmers, noise has been reduced so much that, for models like the Stihl BGA 60 leaf blower, hearing protection is often not even needed. Instead of ruining the silence of peaceful mornings or evenings in your neighbourhood, the Toro and Stihl blowers, hedge trimmers, and even lawn mowers are now just muffled background noise. The performance of Okanagan Power Equipment’s cordless lineup is so good that even the pros are making the leap from gas to battery power.
Kelowna’s Top Tune Up Team
Interestingly, being in tip-top shape for summer doesn’t always involve replacing existing machinery, says Angie. While the old adage “newer is better” holds true most of the time, Angie is quick to point out that her customers sometimes have the right equipment, but the performance is subpar. If the equipment isn’t running or set up correctly, poor performance and frustrating delays take away from your relaxation time. Okanagan Power Equipment doesn’t just sell lawn and garden equipment; they service it, too.

While Angie and her team love showing off their fantastic cordless line-up and discussing the dramatic improvements in the 2026 battery technology, if the customer has satisfactory equipment for the tasks they are managing, the answer might just be that the equipment needs a proper tune-up, or it might never have been set up right to begin with. String trimmers are a prime example, especially gas ones.
Clogged intakes, gummed-up carburetors, and running the wrong string all contribute to poor results. Even just chatting with a pro will unleash the full potential of your equipment, Angie says. “There are some great tricks for prolonging life and efficiency, and we love helping out our customers with helpful tips.” For example, soaking your string trimmer string in water restores the flexibility and rejuvenates the line, something many DIY yard care people might not be aware of.
That’s why investing in dependable machinery isn’t just about convenience; it’s about reclaiming your time, protecting your investment, and powering through the season with confidence. Enjoying the fabulous Okanagan Valley summer doesn’t need to wait until those backyard tasks are done, either. With the right machinery, those tedious chores are often transformed into something you look forward to rather than dread.
