Kelowna Rockets sweep Kamloops Blazers in WHL playoffs

The Kelowna Rockets couldn’t be stopped in the first round as they take the Kamloops Blazers out of the WHL playoffs in four straight games.

One of two teams moving on so far in the WHL postseason, the Kelowna Rockets took control of game four after the first period and closed out with a 6-2 win.

All-stars Tij Iginla and Vojtech Cihar led Kelowna’s offensive charge in the four games against the Kamloops Blazers, taking a combined 11 of Kelowna’s 21 goals in the series. They’re tied with 10 points each as the league’s top playoff scorers so far.

It was the first time the BC division rivals faced off in the post season since the Rockets took out the Blazers out in the first round nine years ago.

In Penticton, the Vees are heading back home for game five against the Seattle Thunderbirds after a Wednesday night loss.

Leading the series 3-1, the league’s newest team and BC division champions could advance to the second round with an April 3 win.

As Kelowna waits for the second round to begin, they may be heading toward a series against the WHL league leaders, the Everett Silvertips, which is the only other team to sweep the first round.

As the host team, the Rockets are guaranteed a spot at this year’s Memorial Cup tournament, but their playoff performance so far may show they belong there among the CHL’s top teams this year.
