iN NUMBERS: Majority of British Columbians surveyed oppose DRIPA

The Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People Act, or DRIPA for short, has been the focus of attention due to recent First Nations land agreements and a BC Conservative call to repeal the act.

Last year, British Columbians were divided but leaning toward support for DRIPA, but now things are moving in the other direction.

Here are the numbers from a recent Angus Reid survey:

  • 53: Per cent of British Columbians polled said that DRIPA goes too far in limiting provincial authority, up from 44 per cent in August 2025.
  • 50: Per cent of British Columbians polled said the province gives too much attention to Indigenous issues, up from 36 per cent in August 2025.
  • 66: Per cent of BC NDP voters polled said that DRIPA was a necessary step towards reconciliation.
  • 70: Per cent of BC Conservative voters polled said DRIPA goes too far.
  • 57: Per cent of British Columbians polled said the province is on the wrong track.
  • 8: Per cent of British Columbians polled said First Nations issues are one of the most important challenges for the province.
  • 58: Per cent of British Columbians polled said they don’t trust that the federal government agreement with Musqueam First Nation won’t impact private property rights.
  • 74: Per cent of British Columbians polled in the Interior would favour private property rights over recognizing Indigenous territory if a conflict arose.
  • 37: Per cent of British Columbians polled approve of Premier David Eby, that’s just seven points higher than Donald Trump’s approval rating in some polls.
