BC Conservative Party fines Milobar leadership campaign

A Kamloops MLA’s bid for leadership of the province’s opposition party has been fined by his own party.

The BC Conservative Party fined Peter Milobar’s campaign $7,500 for a late payment.

Milobar’s campaign was required to pay a $40,000 fee to the party by April 1, but the cheque arrived a day late. A campaign volunteer told the party it was on the way, but a late payment broke party rules, according to a BC Conservative Party notice.

According to a notice on its website, the party acknowledged Milobar’s financial agent is a volunteer and didn’t intentionally break the rules, but a sanction was still warranted.

His campaign team was given until April 11 to pay the $7,500 fine.

Prospective party leaders are required to make three non-refundable payments as part of the leadership race, totalling $90,000. The final $60,000 payment is due April 18.

The Kamloops Centre MLA is one of six candidates in the running to lead the party after John Rustad was ousted. Votes will take place next month with the leader of BC’s official opposition to be announced May 30.
