New signs point to parking in Vernon

VERNON – Big, bold colours will signal tourists and residents alike about where parking, the library, the art gallery or Polson Park can be found.

Vernon city council approved a plan to spend $48,000 on new signage downtown at their meeting this afternoon, Monday, Feb. 23.

“I think we need to refreshen downtown,” mayor Akbal Mund says. “We get a lot of complaints about where is parking, even from our own residents. I think it’s the right direction to take.

“There is a lot of confusion amongst a lot of people in our Greater Vernon area. Where the free parking is or where they can pay less to park longer.”

The city’s long range planner Cleo Corbett says the new signs and the replacements for the directional signs will go up this spring as part of phase one of the Wayfinding Strategy.

“The new signs are larger and brighter, with colour-coded amenities and attractions,” Corbett told council. “They are attractive, playful and modern, and speak to the community character of Vernon.”

Phase two will include pedestrian and cycling signs around Greater Vernon in 2016.
