Silvertips rally to tip Sagueneens 5-3 in Memorial Cup opener for both teams

KELOWNA — Jesse Heslop had a goal and an assist and the Everett Silvertips scored three times in the second period en route to a 5-3 victory over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens at the Memorial Cup tournament on Saturday.

Lukas Kaplan, Zackary Shantz, Carter Bear and Matias Vanhanen also scored for the Western Hockey League champions, who were tied 1-1 after the first period at Prospera Place and briefly trailed 2-1 in the second.

Christophe Berthelot, Alex Huang and Maxim Masse scored for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League champions, who were outshot 37-25 and took three of the game’s four penalties.

UP NEXT

The Kelowna Rockets, who lost 5-0 to the Kitchener Rangers in Friday’s tournament opener, play the Sagueneens (0-1) on Sunday. The Silvertips (1-0) face the Rangers (1-0) on Monday.

The four-team tournament runs until May 31.
