Statistics Canada jobs coming up in Kamloops, Okanagan for census

Statistics Canada has lots of temporary jobs available to Kamloops and Okanagan residents starting this month.

Director General responsible for Census Geoff Bowlby says the federal government agency is hiring locally as it prepares to conduct a national census this spring.

Bowlby says there are 34 enumerator positions available in the Penticton area along with three supervisory and three 'other' positions.

Kelowna has 108 enumerator vacancies to fill, along with five supervisory and five 'other' positions.

There are 214 enumerator positions in Vernon, along with 14 supervisory and 14 'other' positions.

The remainder of the Okanagan (including the Similkameen) has 156 enumerator positions up for grabs along with 16 supervisory and 16 'other' positions available.

Kamloops has 123 enumerator positions available, along with five crew leader and five assistant positions.

Bowlby says most of the hirees will be needed from mid-April until the end of June. Supervisory positions will start in March.

Some positions will see their work extend into July.

Hours will vary for enumerators, who are being offered $17.83 per hour.

Crew leader positions will pay $23 per hour with assistant supervisory positions paying a lesser amount.

“Hours vary from one week to the next. A crew leader should expect stability in the hours, it’s effectively full time work, but enumerators will find some weeks busier than others,” Bowlby says.

He says enumerators can expect between 20 and 40 hours of work per week.

Successful candidates will be required to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.

"Everybody is based out of their homes. Some of the work involves making phone calls, but most of the work for enumerators involves going door to door,” Bowlby says.

He says enumerators will be provided with hand sanitizer and masks, and won’t be permitted to enter anyone's home.

“All the activity of the enumerator is outside, on the doorstep,” he says.

Those interested in applying for a Census position should go here.

Census data is used to plan public institutions such as schools, health and emergency centres. This year’s census will require approximately 32,000 employees to count every person in Canada.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
