Multiple properties were evacuated because of an unstable crane at a now-burnt Penticton construction site, and the risk is also barring investigators from examining the scene.
A three-alarm fire at the construction site of what was to become a 48,000 square-foot long-term care home on Green Avenue. At least 60 firefighters were called to the scene as the wood-frame build went up in flames.
Crews were on the scene overnight on May 27 as they battled not only the massive blaze but also six spot fires, started by embers flying up to three blocks away.
The cause of the investigation remains unknown. Penticton RCMP refused to comment when reached by iNFOnews.ca, but fire chief Mike Larsson said the investigation hasn’t started yet.
“We have not yet been able to access the site due to safety concerns related to the stability of the crane. The scene remains secured and a full investigation will proceed once it is safe to enter the area,” he said in a written statement.
Multiple homes remain under evacuation due to safety concerns at the construction site, and the City of Penticton has set up emergency support services for those displaced. Although some were evacuated from their homes, there have been no injuries in the blaze reported.
Meanwhile, the loss of the incomplete 200-bed long-term care centre is “devastating” as many ageing British Columbians need the space, according to Health Minister Josie Osborne.
She said the province needs to act urgently to replace the loss in order to meet the growing demand.
