iN NUMBERS: Lumber production down since last year in BC Southern Interior

The B.C. lumber industry has been going through its fair share of problems from tariffs to mill closures. Lumber production and shipments have dropped significantly since March of last year, especially in the Southern Interior.

Here are the numbers from Statistics Canada:

  • 715,400: Cubic metres of softwood lumber was produced in the BC Southern Interior in March 2025.
  • 604,900: Cubic metres of softwood lumber was produced in the BC Southern Interior in March 2026.
  • 704,700: Cubic metres of softwood lumber was shipped from the BC Southern Interior in March 2025.
  • 608,600: Cubic metres of softwood lumber was shipped from the BC Southern Interior in March 2026.
  • 10.5: Per cent. That’s how much B.C.’s lumber production was down from March 2025.
  • 12.5: Per cent. That’s how much B.C.’s lumber shipments were down from March 2025.
  • 3: Major mills closed in B.C. in 2025, the Crofton pulp mill on Vancouver Island, the West Fraser sawmill in 100 Mile House and a Drax pellet mill in Williams Lake.
  • 490: US Dollars. That’s the latest industry price for 1,000 board feet of B.C. 2x4s, according to the Ministry of Forests.
  • 467: US Dollars. That’s the average industry price for 1,000 board feet of B.C. 2x4s in 2025, according to the Ministry of Forests.
