Vernon rec centre to be transformed into COVID-19 vaccination clinic

The Vernon Recreation Centre auditorium is set to be transformed into a large-scale vaccination clinic.

As of March 8, the rec centre auditorium will be closed to the public as the space is given over to Interior Health to become a vaccine clinic for approximately the next eight months.

According to a City of Vernon media release, the auditorium's main floor and the Sunset breakout room will be used for the clinic which may extend more than eight months if needed.

"The use of the auditorium for the vaccination clinics will be for a limited time, and the benefits to the Greater Vernon community outweigh any inconvenience that may occur," Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said in the release.

The centre will open first to seniors aged 90 and over and Aboriginal seniors aged 65 and over.

City staff have identified alternative locations for most programs that normally take place at the rec centre auditorium.

"Staff will be in touch with user groups to discuss possible alternative locations for their events. Events must meet the Provincial Health Orders regarding safe, play environments," recreation service director Doug Ross said in the release.

Those attending the clinic for a vaccine are encouraged to park in the Curling Rink parking lot off 39 Avenue and access a temporary entrance which is being established at the north end of the auditorium.

"I encourage all residents in the Vernon area to make your appointment when you are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination," Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Karin Goodison said in the release.

Seniors immediately eligible for a vaccine can call 1-877-740-7747 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week to book a spot.
