Air Canada captain piloted more than 900 flights without proper licence: police

Police have charged a former Air Canada captain who they allege piloted hundreds of flights over 17 years with fraudulent licences.

Peel police say the pilot from Barrie, Ont., is facing charges including fraud, forged documents and public mischief.

Police say the accused was a certified commercial pilot, but he was promoted to captain without the required airline transport pilot licence.

Police say he joined Air Canada in 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2009 until his retirement in 2025.

In a statement, Air Canada says the individual was removed from active duty once this was discovered and voluntarily reported to Transport Canada.

Air Canada says an audit of its pilots found no other instances of non-compliance.
