Enbridge seeks approval to reverse, expand Ontario-Quebec oil pipeline
CALGARY – Enbridge Inc. is seeking regulatory approval to reverse the flow of a Quebec-to-Ontario oil pipeline and ship greater volumes of crude through it.
Enbridge’s Line 9 pipeline currently carries imported crude from Montreal to southern Ontario.
It flowed in the opposite direction when it was built in the 1970s, was reversed two decades later, and now Enbridge wants to restore its west-to-east flow.
Enbridge (TSX:ENB) already has regulatory approval to reverse the segment between Sarnia and Westover, Ont., and now it’s applied to the NEB for permission to reverse the remaining stretch.
It also wants to increase its capacity from 240,000 barrels per day to 300,000 barrels per day.
The project will enable eastern refineries to buy Alberta crude, which is cheaper than the international crude they currently use.
