Italy’s Matteo Marsaglia turns in daring super-G run on hard course for 1st World Cup win
BEAVER CREEK, Colo. – Matteo Marsaglia of Italy took big risks on a challenging super-G course for his first World Cup victory.
Finding speed in sections of the hill where others were slowing, Marsaglia finished in 1 minute, 14.68 seconds to edge Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway by 0.27 seconds Saturday. Hannes Reichelt of Austria was third and Ted Ligety of the U.S. took fourth.
The margin between a good run and going off course was slim on the tight layout. Quite a few skiers didn’t finish, including Austria’s Max Franz. He smacked a gate and fell hard to the snow, bumping his head. Franz was taken to a hospital for observation.
It’s been a good week for Italy, with Christof Innerhofer winning the downhill Friday.
