Purdue University creative writing teacher wins $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A Purdue University creative writing teacher has won this year’s $100,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award from a California university.

Marianne Boruch received the award for her collection, “The Book of Hours.” A ceremony will be held in April at Claremont Graduate University east of Los Angeles.

Boruch teaches at Purdue and in the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, Paris Review and other publications.

The Tufts award is one of the largest monetary poetry prizes in the U.S.

Heidy Steidlmayer of Vacaville, Calif., won the $10,000 Kate Tufts Discovery Award for her book “Fowling Piece.” The university says the award is given for a first book by a poet of “genuine promise.”
