CALGARY – A Calgary police officer says a mother accused of leaving her newborn baby in a Dumpster was watching from the steps of her apartment as the child was saved by authorities.
Const. David Hsu (SOO) testified he saw blood on Meredith Borowiec’s (BOHR’-uh-WIK’s) leg and coat sleeve and immediately became suspicious that she was the child’s mother.
Borowiec is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of two of her newborn children in 2008 and 2009, before the child was found in the garbage in 2010.
The Crown wants the baby found in the trash ruled as similar-fact evidence so it can be used in the murder trial, which is being heard by a judge without a jury.
A separate attempted-murder trial is scheduled for this fall dealing the with the child in the garbage.
The 31-year-old woman is being held in custody.
