Job vacancies down in January from a year earlier: StatsCan

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says there were 200,000 job vacancies in January, a drop of 22,000 from the same month last year.

The agency says there were 6.5 jobless people for every job vacancy, compared with 6.1 a year earlier.

It says the national job vacancy rate was 1.4 per cent in January, down from 1.6 per cent in January 2012.

For 2012 as a whole, there was an average of 250,000 job vacancies a month among Canadian businesses, compared with 235,000 in 2011.

For every job vacancy, there were 5.5 unemployed people in 2012, down from 6.0 in 2011.
