New inquiry into Hillsborough Stadium disaster to take place start of 2014

LONDON – A new inquest into the Hillsborough Stadium disaster that killed 96 Liverpool fans will take place early next year.

The High Court in London quashed the original accidental death verdicts in December after secret documents examined by an independent panel uncovered a police coverup.

Lord Justice Goldring failed to give an exact date for the new inquest but said Thursday “I will simply say they will start in early 2014.” He added that the venue of the inquest will be announced next week, with campaigners preferring it to be held in London or England’s northwest.

The fans died in a crush at the FA Cup semifinal match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough, the home of English club Sheffield Wednesday, in 1989. It is Britain’s worst sports disaster.
