B.C. judge convicts two of trying to smuggle ecstasy to Australia

VANCOUVER – Two British Columbians have been convicted of trying to smuggle nearly eight kilograms of ecstasy to Australia more than three years ago.

Canada Border Services Agency officers at Vancouver International Airport found the drugs in hidden compartments in the suitcases of 33-three-year-old Nadine Prevost and 49-year-old Michel Tremblay on April 9, 2010.

Justice Gregory Fitch says the central issue in the case focused on whether the accused knew their checked luggage contained illicit drugs.

Fitch says he is satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that both knew the drugs were in the suitcases and their “innocent dupe” defences made no sense.

He says he could have also convicted both on the basis they were reckless about the contents of the suitcases.

The ruling notes Prevost is a single mother of two teenaged children, and Tremblay has been battling addiction issues after a motor-vehicle accident six or seven years ago.
