Former RCMP officer who kicked a man in the face to be sentenced Thursday
KELOWNA, B.C. – The former Kelowna RCMP officer who admitted to kicking a man in the face two years ago will be sentenced Thursday.
At a court hearing today in Kelowna, the Crown asked for a suspended sentence, a firearms ban and 18 months probation for Geoff Mantler.
His lawyer is asking for a conditional discharge.
Mantler — who has resigned from the force — pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm last year after he was caught on video kicking Buddy Tavares in the face.
After learning that Mantler quit, Tavares told reporters that he had concerns the officer would get his job back.
Tavares says he believes that it was only a matter of time before Mantler killed someone.
