Decision on new Edmonton Oilers arena delayed yet again, mayor apologizes

EDMONTON – A long-running debate over the future of a new home for the Edmonton Oilers is going into double overtime.

Councillors have delayed for a second time a decision on whether to sign off on a master agreement for a $480-million rink for the NHL team.

They voted instead to have bureaucrats come back soon with more options to fund the final $55 million for the project.

Councillors are still hoping the Alberta government will come up with the money, but Premier Alison Redford has repeatedly said there will be no direct funding.

The city has already agreed in principle to build a rink and share the costs with Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz (KAYTZ).

The arena has divided citizens and detractors say the deal is too lopsided in favour of Katz if public money is needed for the rink.
