LONDON – The Premier League could go into extra time.
After the final round of matches on Sunday, Arsenal and Chelsea could have to contest a playoff to determine who finishes third and claims an automatic Champions League qualification place.
Chelsea currently has a two-point lead over Arsenal. But if Arsenal beats Newcastle 2-1 and Chelsea draws 0-0 with Everton on Sunday, the teams would be level on points and have the same number of goals scored and conceded.
Premier League rules state that the teams would have to meet in a playoff on a neutral venue to decide third place.
The fourth-place finisher, which could still be Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham, would then have to play a Champions League qualifier in August to reach the group stage.
