BOYDS, Md. – Canadian Dwayne De Rosario recorded a hat trick to give struggling D.C. United a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
The Toronto native put United ahead in the 24th minute with a blast from outside the box into the lower left corner of the net. A long scoring drought by both teams ensued until De Rosario gave United a 2-0 lead with his second goal in the 75th.
Jack McInerney scored a minute later to pull the Union back within a goal, but De Rosario completed his hat trick in the 85th and D.C. was able to hold on.
With the win, United advances to a quarter-final matchup against the New England Revolution on June 26.
