Slightly smaller surplus, but new B.C. budget expected to mirror February budget

VICTORIA – As Finance Minister Mike de Jong prepares to release today’s provincial budget, nobody is saying “stop me if you’ve heard this one before.”

That’s because de Jong admits the latest budget is almost identical to the one introduced in February, before the May 14 election.

De Jong says some of the numbers have been updated to reflect slightly lower than expected revenues, but he’s still calling for a modest surplus of around $200-million.

He says the month-long legislative session will focus on debating and passing the budget.

Wednesday’s throne speech indicated Christy Clark’s Liberals intend to stick closely to their election pledges to balance budgets over the next four years.

The premier is also promising to freeze taxes, cut B.C.’s nearly $57-billion debt and create jobs.
