Cheveldayoff, Jets prioritizing the future over the present at NHL draft

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – As the Jets move to the Western Conference and hope to end a seven-year playoff drought, Winnipeg’s general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said he’s prioritizing the future over the present at this weekend’s NHL draft.

The Jets have the 13th pick, three in the second round and 10 overall. Of course they may not use all of them, but in a draft that most consider deep, it doesn’t hurt to have options.

Cheveldayoff and his scouting staff would love to be able to improve the team for the 2013-14 season, but he said the main point of the weekend is re-stocking the organization with prospects.

Winnipeg managed to do that last year when it took defenceman Jacob Trouba with the ninth pick. Trouba is expected to make the team out of camp next season.
