An Opposition MP wants Transport Canada to investigate the near-collapse of a flood-damaged CP rail bridge in Calgary to see if tough new rail safety regulations were broken.
New Democrat Transport critic Olivia Chow says someone needs to be held responsible after several petrochemical-laden cars were stranded on the bridge after one of its piers sank.
The new rules, which came into effect last May, could hold individuals responsible for breaking safety with fines of up to $50,000 or six months in jail.
A federal spokeswoman says the government will wait for a Transportation Safety Board investigation into the accident.
Such investigations usually take at least a year.
Meanwhile, CP has been ordered to slow its trains to 17 kilometres an hour when crossing any of its bridges that may have been affected by the floods until those bridges have been fully inspected.
