Britain’s Laura Robson withdraws from Rogers Cup women’s tournament
TORONTO – Britain’s Laura Robson has pulled out of the Rogers Cup women’s tournament due to a right wrist injury.
The world No. 32-ranked Robson — making her Rogers Cup debut — was scheduled to play world No. 59 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium in the opening round Monday afternoon.
American Bethanie Mattek-Sands replaced Robson as the “lucky loser.”
Robson was coming off a strong performance at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round — the first British woman to do it since 1998.
In early results Monday, Flavia Pennetta of Italy became the first player through to the second round. She eliminated Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Mona Barthel of Germany also advanced with a 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-6(1) win over China’s Jie Zheng.
No. 14 American Sloane Stephens was scheduled to play Kristina Mladenovic of France in the evening while 18-year-old Canadian qualifier Carol Zhao takes on Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
