Supreme Court Justice Kagan to speak in Newport at 250th anniversary of oldest synagogue in US

NEWPORT, R.I. – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan will speak in Newport as the part of a celebration celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s oldest synagogue.

Kagan will speak at the Touro Synagogue’s annual reading of a letter sent by George Washington in 1790 to Newport’s Jewish community. In it, Washington promises the new government will never support religious bigotry or persecution.

Kagan is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. She is also scheduled to speak Tuesday in Providence at a celebration of the 350th anniversary of the state’s charter.

The congregation based at the Touro Synagogue is embroiled in a legal dispute with the nation’s oldest Jewish congregation, based in New York City, which says it owns Touro. Lawsuits are pending in New York and Rhode Island.
