BRAGG CREEK, Alta. – The Alberta government is offering homeowners living in floodways a chance to get out.
Even if their houses weren’t damaged, property owners are eligible for a buyout up to a home’s tax-assessed value this year.
The government says about 250 homes in six communities are eligible for the payout, which could run as high as $175 million.
Most of the homes are in High River, but residences in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Bragg Creek, Black Diamond and Turner Valley also qualify.
The province intends to demolish the houses or sell them if they are removed from their lots.
The offer does not apply to the hard-hit Hamptons community in High River, because the neighbourhood is not considered to be in a floodway.
