Phil Mickelson opens with a 63 in Boston to leave Tiger Woods, Adam Scott in his wake
NORTON, Mass. – Phil Mickelson showed how much he enjoys playing with Tiger Woods by opening with a 63 in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Mickelson turned out to be the big star in the feature group of the top three players in the world ranking. He made seven birdies on his front nine. He hit a 6-iron to tap-in range for an eagle. And even when he hit his worst shot of the day deep into the trees, he salvaged a bogey.
He wound up with a one-shot lead over Kevin Stadler among the early starters at the TPC Boston. Hunter Mahan had a 65.
Woods missed two good birdie chances at the end of his round and had to settle for a 68. Masters champion Adam Scott had a 73.
