Djokovic loses big game but wins the match, advances to final of US Open

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Top-seeded Novak Djokovic has advanced to his fourth straight U.S. Open final, overcoming the loss of a 21-minute game in the fifth set to defeat Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Ninth-seeded Wawrinka saved five break points and hit a service winner on the 30th point of the epic game Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth set. But he came out exhausted and lost the next two games. Djokovic then served out the match to move into his 12th Grand Slam final.

He will play the winner of the later semifinal between No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 8 Richard Gasquet.

Wawrinka, appearing in his first Grand Slam semifinal, finished with 57 winners but Djokovic played his typically solid defence to improve to 20-7 lifetime in five-setters.
