Bloc expels Mourani from caucus for her criticism of Quebec’s charter of values

OTTAWA – The Bloc Quebecois is expelling Maria Mourani from caucus for her criticism of Quebec’s proposed charter of values.

Bloc Leader Daniel Paille made the announcement this morning.

The expulsion comes one day after Mourani warned the charter of values would do serious damage to the sovereigntist cause.

She said the independence movement has spent years courting minority groups and that the Parti Quebecois government’s proposal risks undoing all that work.

Mourani was also one of several sovereigntists to sign a declaration against the charter.

The PQ plan would forbid Quebec’s public employees from wearing more visible religious symbols — including hijabs, turbans, yarmulkes and larger-than-average crucifixes.

The Bloc caucus now stands at four members.
