Obama, Indian Prime Minister Singh meet at White House amid concerns ties have stagnated

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has welcomed Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling him a friend and partner. Obama says India continues to suffer from terrorism and the U.S. and India have a shared interest in reducing tensions with Pakistan.

Obama spoke after meeting with Singh at the White House. The meeting comes amid concerns the close partnership between the U.S. and India has stagnated in recent years.

Obama also praised India’s progress on civilian nuclear power.

Both men said they were focused on reducing India’s poverty.

Singh also said he was looking forward to meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but said, quote, “even though expectations have to be tamped down.” Sharif will meet with Obama next month.
