Preliminary hearing for Quebec mayor charged with gangsterism set for June 2014
LAVAL, Que. – A preliminary hearing for a former prominent Quebec mayor charged with gangsterism will be held next summer.
Gilles Vaillancourt and 36 other accused appeared in a courtroom in Laval today.
They were arrested last spring by Quebec’s anti-corruption unit.
Judge Gilles Garneau announced today the preliminary hearing for the 37 will begin next June 30 and run until Aug. 14.
Vaillancourt resigned as Laval mayor last November after 23 years in power, earning himself the nickname the “Monarch of Laval.”
He stepped down after he was the target of scathing testimony at the Charbonneau Commission looking into corruption in the province’s construction industry.
