Some old-order Mennonite children will be back with parents within weeks: lawyer
WINNIPEG – About half of the children seized from an old-order Mennonite community in Manitoba could be back with their parents by the end of the month.
About 40 children from the small orthodox community were taken in June, when 13 people were charged with child abuse.
Five of the families, with a total of 19 children, were in a court hearing today that was closed to the media.
Afterward, their lawyer, Paul Walsh said child and family services has agreed to a timeline that will see all of his clients’ children returned by November 1.
Walsh says in exchange, the parents have agreed to have social workers visit their homes and check on the kids, as well as other conditions.
There is no word yet on when the other children taken from the community may be returned.
